Prof. Ioannis Tokatlidis is a member of the academic staff in the Democritus
University of Thrace / Department of Agricultural Development. He was graduated by
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki/Faculty of Agriculture, Greece, and received
his PhD in 1998. He specializes in Agronomy and Crop Breeding, placing so far
emphasis on issues related to crop stability, cultivar longevity and utilization of
landraces. More specifically, on the intra-crop competition which interferes with the
efficiency of the cropping systems in resource use, as well as with effectiveness of
selection in breeding new varieties. Particular topics were, interplant distance as
factor affecting selection efficiency, crop yield potential components, plant density
and stability, development of density-independent varieties, G x E interaction, plant-
to-plant variability and genotype buffering, intra-cultivar variation and methods to
conserve breeder's seed, homozygotic vs heterozygotic vigour, usefulness of
physiological traits as indirect selection criteria, breeding for tolerance to drought and
heat stress. Beyond research papers, he has a considerable number of review articles
related to the above topics in acknowledged journals, i.e., Field Crops Research,
Agronomy for Sustainable Development, Annals of Applied Biology, Crop Science,
Euphytica.
